Selling your car before leaving the UAE

Selling up before you leave the UAE: clearing finance and fines, cancelling registration and insurance, the official insurance refund, and how it fits with cancelling your visa.

If you are leaving the UAE, selling the car is usually one of the bigger items on the list — and it is easier when it is not left to the last week. The steps are the same as any sale, with a couple of extra things to line up around your insurance and your residency.

Start with finance and fines

If the car is financed, clearing the loan and getting the bank's electronic release is the step most likely to take time, so start it early — see our guide to selling a financed car. Outstanding traffic fines also need to be settled before the registration can be transferred or cancelled.

Transfer to a buyer, or cancel the registration

If you have a buyer, you transfer ownership to them through your emirate's authority in the normal way. If you are exporting the car or handing it back, the registration is instead cancelled — in Dubai this is done by issuing a Vehicle Possession Certificate through the RTA, after which the car is no longer fit to drive on the road. Either way, number plates must be handed over within the required window (the RTA gives 14 days) or the request can be cancelled without a refund.

Cancel your insurance and claim the refund

Transferring the car's ownership is an accepted reason to cancel your motor policy early, and — provided no claim has been paid or is pending on the policy — you are generally entitled to a partial refund of the premium. The UAE's official Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy sets this refund on a sliding scale: broadly, the less of the policy year that has run, the more you get back. Ask your insurer to calculate your refund against that official schedule rather than assuming a figure.

Fit it around your visa and Emirates ID

Your residence visa is normally cancelled by your sponsor, and your Emirates ID is linked to it. Because a valid Emirates ID sits behind insurance and registration steps, it is generally simpler to complete the sale while your residency and ID are still active, rather than afterwards. Plan the sale and your visa cancellation so they do not clash — confirm the current requirements on the official portals, as your own circumstances and timing can differ.

Line up offers before you go

With a departure date fixed, waiting on a public advert is the last thing you want. Carbai lets verified UAE dealers send private offers after a single submission, so you can gather them in one place and move quickly once you decide. You still complete the finance clearance and the official transfer yourself — Carbai simply brings the offers to you.
