Selling a car in the UAE needs less paperwork than many people expect, because most of the transfer is now done digitally. The exact list depends on the emirate and on whether the car is financed, but the items below cover what a private seller is usually asked for. Always confirm the current requirements on the official service page for your emirate.

What you generally need

  • Emirates ID — for both the seller and the buyer. The RTA lists a valid Emirates ID for both parties as a requirement for changing ownership, and the national portal lists the original Emirates ID for registration.
  • The vehicle registration card (Mulkiya). This is the ownership card issued with the plate numbers. The buyer receives a new Mulkiya once the car is registered in their name.
  • Valid motor insurance in the buyer's name. An electronic vehicle insurance document from an authorised insurer is required before the car can be registered to the buyer.
  • A passed technical inspection. The car normally needs a valid inspection from an authorised testing centre before it is registered to the buyer. Requirements vary by emirate and vehicle age, and a periodic-test exemption for newer cars may not remove the inspection needed to transfer ownership — confirm what applies on the official portal.
  • Electronic mortgage release (eNOC), if the car is financed. Any loan on the vehicle must be cleared and released electronically before ownership can transfer.
  • Proof of Gulf Specifications compliance, where applicable. The RTA asks for a document showing the vehicle meets Gulf Specifications if this is not already shown on the customs card.

The Sale and Purchase Agreement

In Dubai, the transfer produces a digital Sale and Purchase Agreement that both the seller and buyer sign electronically — the buyer receives a link by SMS and email to sign. You do not need to prepare a separate contract yourself; the agreement is generated as part of the RTA process. Abu Dhabi has an equivalent digital transfer through TAMM.

If the car is financed

A financed car carries a mortgage registered in favour of the bank, and that has to be released before the car can change hands. Once the loan is settled, the bank issues an electronic release (eNOC) that is recorded on the traffic system. Timing varies by bank, so it is worth starting this early — our guide to selling a financed car explains the step in full.

Where requirements differ

Abu Dhabi, and the northern emirates through the Ministry of Interior and Emirates Vehicle Gate, have their own service pages, documents and fees, which can differ from Dubai's. For anything specific — a company-owned car, an inter-emirate transfer, or an export — check the official portal for the relevant emirate before you start.

What Carbai needs is different

The documents above are for the official ownership transfer. To simply receive dealer offers through Carbai, you do not upload any of them — you provide the vehicle details and photographs, and your contact information stays private. The paperwork above only comes into play once you have chosen a dealer and are completing the sale directly with them.
